Antiqued/Distressed colored stainless steel

The antique-style colored stainless steel is a high-end retro decorative metal material made through a combination of chemical oxidation, copper plating coloring, and manual aging processes. Unlike the uniform color of conventional colored stainless steel, its surface presents natural mottled, deep and interwoven traces of time and retro metallic colors. While retaining the excellent physical properties of stainless steel such as high strength and corrosion resistance, it gives the metal a thick texture and artistic charm brought by the passage of time. The aging texture of each sheet is randomly generated and cannot be replicated. It is an ideal decorative metal sheet for creating retro, nostalgic, industrial, and new Chinese style spaces.

Production Principle

By utilizing the synergistic effect of multiple composite processes, first, a base color (such as bronze, copper, red bronze, etc.) is formed on the surface of the stainless steel through chemical coloring or copper plating. Then, by using local acid etching, electrolytic oxidation, hand painting and sandblasting techniques to create an aged effect, a faux antique effect with varying color depths and bumpy, worn textures is deliberately created. Through precise control of the concentration of the solution, coloring temperature (118℃ - 128℃), soaking time and hand polishing force, each sheet of material is given a natural, random and non-reproducible "patina" texture. Finally, after a sealing and color-fixing treatment, the aged textures are locked in, preventing further oxidation and corrosion, achieving stable color and lasting freshness.

The mainstream aging techniques can be classified into four categories:

  • Chemical oxidation method: Using acidic solutions (such as the chromium-sulfuric acid system) to induce controlled oxidation of chromium elements on the surface of stainless steel. By leveraging the principle of thin film interference, natural semi-transparent colors such as bronze and bronze can be formed. Then, through local manual polishing, the underlying metal luster is exposed, simulating the "natural patina" formed over hundreds of years;

  • Water-coated copper aging method: First, electrolytically coat the surface of stainless steel with a high-purity copper layer. Then, through sulfurization and blackening treatment, a dark copper sulfide layer is formed. Finally, by hand, the artisan performs wire drawing and polishing, partially removing the black color to reveal the gold-copper base color, presenting a black-gold interwoven wire-golden texture;

  • PVD coating + aging method: After forming a stable metal color layer through vacuum coating, combined with wire drawing or etching treatment to create oxidation and wear marks, the color is stable and has strong weather resistance, suitable for outdoor use and large-scale projects;

  • Wire drawing and color rubbing method: First, draw fine textures on the surface, then use manual color rubbing or immersion to deposit pigments in the texture grooves, forming worn aging effects with distinct layers and a retro style.

Core Advantages

Uniquely exquisite artistic texture: A combination of chemical aging and hand polishing creates a colorful and multi-layered effect. Each piece of the board has a random texture that cannot be replicated, presenting natural traces of time, with extremely high artistic decorative value.

Performance without compromise: The aging effect only affects the surface, while the strength and corrosion resistance of the stainless steel base material are completely preserved. It combines retro aesthetic appeal with metal practicality.

High cost-effectiveness with steel instead of copper: The appearance and texture are comparable to real copper plates, with a weight of only about one-third of pure copper, and the cost is significantly lower than pure copper. It is an ideal alternative material for historical building restoration and commercial projects.

Anti-rust, anti-corrosion, and weather-resistant: After closed color fixation treatment, a protective layer forms on the surface, resistant to corrosion, salt fog, and suitable for temperature differences of -40℃ to 80℃ and outdoor harsh environments.

Durable and scratch-resistant without peeling: The aging layer is cured and has strong adhesion (up to 5B grade), and it is not prone to fading or peeling during daily use, with a lifespan of up to several decades.

Rich colors and versatile styles: It can simulate various retro effects such as bronze artifacts, ancient copper artifacts, and aged ironwork, and is suitable for various design styles including European, American, industrial, and new Chinese styles.
